16, 18 or 20 Inches: Where Your Necklace Sits, and How to Layer

Two inches decide whether a pendant sits at your throat or on your chest. Where 16, 18 and 20 inch chains land, how to measure yourself, and how to layer them.

Two inches decide whether a pendant sits in the hollow of your throat or rests on your chest. Before you choose a piece, choose where you want it to land.

16 inches

Sits at the base of the throat, on the collarbone. Close, deliberate, and visible above almost every neckline, including a crew neck or a buttoned shirt. It is where a Diamond Tennis Necklace looks its best: a clean line of light right at the collarbone.

18 inches

Falls just below the collarbone. The most common length, and the safest choice if you are buying for someone else. A single stone like the Pear lab diamond necklace or the Round Solitaire Necklace sits right where the eye goes in an open collar or a V-neck.

20 inches

A couple of inches lower again. Made for layering, or for a pendant you want to rest on the chest over a scoop neck or a slip dress.

How to measure

Take a soft tape or a piece of string and measure around your neck where you want the chain to rest. Add two inches. That is your length. If you are between two, take the longer one; you can always wear it with a scarf or a collar, but a chain that is too short will always feel too short.

How to layer

Keep two inches between chains so each one has its own space and they don't tangle. Start with the line at 16, add a pendant at 18, and stop there or add a third at 20.

One we keep coming back to: the Diamond Tennis Necklace at the collarbone with the Diamond Heart Necklace below it. A full line and a single shape, in the same gold.

Mix textures rather than repeating them. A line of diamonds, then a solitaire, then a name: the Signature Name Necklace at the bottom of a stack turns three necklaces into something that could only be yours.
