Diamond Eye Ring

A bold, quiet ring built around a single bezel-set marquise lab-grown diamond, sunk flush into a sculpted dome of solid 14k gold. Signet in spirit, modern in execution.

Three carats sit in the middle of it, and the bezel holds the stone so low that nothing catches on a sleeve. This is a serious diamond you can wear while typing, driving and shaking hands all day.

• Setting: Full bezel, flush with the surface of the dome. The gold wraps the girdle completely, including both points of the marquise, which are the most vulnerable part of this shape.

A marquise reads longer than its carat weight suggests. At 3ct set into the face of a signet, the stone spans most of the dome and the eye takes it in as one continuous form rather than a stone sitting on a ring.

• The dome and the shank read as one continuous form, with no visible break at the shoulders.
• The bezel is worked down onto the stone by hand after setting, which is why the diamond sits level with the gold instead of standing proud of it.
• The interior is polished and slightly rounded, so the ring turns easily on the finger and does not bite when your hands swell.

✦ How to Wear It

On the index finger. That is where a signet has always lived, and where this one looks least like an engagement ring and most like a decision.

Stack it against the Ridged Gold for texture on the same hand, or leave the rest of that hand bare and let the dome do the work. It sits flat enough to wear on your right hand alongside a wedding set on your left without the two competing. Point the marquise toward your fingertip and it lengthens the whole hand.

• Solid 14k gold will not tarnish or fade. It needs cleaning, not restoration.
• Warm water, mild soap and a soft toothbrush. Concentrate on the seam where the bezel meets the stone, where soap film builds and flattens the light.
• Take it off for the gym. A gold band takes the pressure of a bar or a dumbbell straight into its shape.
• Off before swimming. Chlorine attacks the alloys in gold over time.
• A high-polish dome collects fine scratches with wear. That is normal, and solid gold can be professionally polished back to new. Plating cannot.
