A single letter, pavé set in lab-grown diamonds, hanging from a fine solid 14k gold chain. It is small on purpose. A letter this size does not announce itself across a room, it waits until someone is close enough to read it.

The weight varies by letter, and that is not a rounding error. A W has considerably more surface to cover than an I. Every letter is set to the same density regardless, so an M and a J read equally bright even though one carries twice the stones.

• The charm hangs from a jump ring rather than being fixed in place, so the letter rights itself as you move and does not spend the day face down.
• The back of the charm is polished flat and smooth, which is what stops a pavé piece feeling scratchy against the inside of a wrist.
• Closed with a lobster claw, small enough to disappear against the chain but properly sprung, so it does not open in a coat sleeve.

On its own, on your non-dominant wrist, where it takes the least abuse. A delicate chain lives longest on the hand you use least.

It layers better than almost anything else in the collection, because it is thin enough to sit beneath a heavier piece without competing. Under the Nameplate Bangle it works especially well: the cuff carries the words, the initial carries the sparkle. Skip stacking it with a watch on the same wrist. A watch case will grind against pavé over time, and pavé always loses.

• Solid 14k gold does not tarnish or fade. It only needs cleaning.
• Warm water, a drop of mild soap and a very soft brush. Work behind the charm as well as across the face, since light returns through the back of a pavé setting.
• Hand cream is the real enemy here. Pavé this fine goes flat within a week of daily moisturiser if it is never rinsed.
• Skip ultrasonic cleaners at home. They can loosen pavé beads over time, and on a charm this small one missing stone is visible.
• Off before swimming. Chlorine attacks the alloys in gold over time.
• Store it flat rather than dropped in a dish. Fine chains knot fast, and a knot under tension is how they snap.
