It looks bigger than a round of the same carat, and it draws a soft vertical line down the lobe instead of sitting there as a dot. An oval is a brilliant cut stretched along one axis. Set the long axis vertical. That is the version that lengthens the lobe and, by extension, the whole side of the face. Turned horizontal an oval reads wide and slightly off, so glance at a mirror after you put them in and give each one a quarter turn if needed.

Ovals stack beautifully with anything curved. A plain gold huggie or a small hoop above them repeats the shape and makes a two-piercing ear look designed rather than accumulated. From 3ct upward the oval starts behaving like a drop earring while still sitting flush against the lobe, so hair up, neckline simple, and skip the statement necklace. In yellow gold the warmth softens the outline further. In white gold the oval reads sleeker and taller.

• Solid 14k gold will not tarnish or fade. It only needs cleaning.
• Warm water, mild soap, soft toothbrush. Run the brush along the underside of the basket where oil collects, especially at the two narrow ends.
• Take them out before you sleep. An elongated stone rotates against a pillow, and the push back loosens with the movement.
• No showering, no swimming. Chlorine attacks the alloys in gold, and soap film under the setting dulls the light fast.
