✦ The Pear Cut

A pear is half round brilliant and half marquise, and it behaves like both. The rounded end scatters the same wide fire a round does. The tapered end funnels that light into a narrow tip that glows brighter than any other part of the stone. That asymmetry is why a pear looks like it is moving even when it is perfectly still, and it is why the shape has never gone out of fashion in over three hundred years.

Because it points, you get to decide what it says. Tip up toward the top of the ear and the line lifts, which reads editorial and slightly unexpected. Tip down toward the jaw and it becomes a classic drop, softer and more romantic. Most women wear it point down the first month and point up by the third. Decide your orientation and commit for the day. Point down flatters a rounder face and softens everything. Point up draws the eye toward the top of the ear and pairs beautifully with pulled-back hair. Whichever you choose, make both ears match, because a mismatched pair of pears looks like an accident rather than a decision.

If you have a second piercing, this is the shape that rewards it: run the pear point up in the lower hole and set a small round stud above it, and the ear reads as one continuous rising line. Below the ear, the pear plays well with anything that repeats the shape. At 3ct and above the stud starts doing the work of a real drop earring, so keep the neck bare and let it be the only thing happening.
