Four cuts in one cluster means four different ways of returning light at once. The emerald gives you broad flashes, the oval and the pear give you fire, and the marquise gives you length. A matched cluster of one shape would read as a single brighter stone; this reads as a collection, which is the whole illusion.

• The cluster is set low and flat so it lies against the skin rather than tipping forward under its own weight.
• The stones are set at slightly different heights, which is what stops four shapes in one space from reading as a flat mosaic.

✦ How to Wear It

At 16" the cluster sits in the hollow of the throat, where the off-centre setting is most obvious. At 18" it falls lower and the asymmetry softens into something you notice on second look.

Wear it alone. This is one of the few pieces in the collection that does not want layering — the cluster already contains four shapes, and adding a second chain turns composition into noise. If you must layer, go long and plain underneath.

• Solid 14k gold does not tarnish or fade.
• Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. A cluster has far more interior edges than a solitaire, and those gaps between the four stones are where everything collects.
• Take particular care of the marquise and pear points. They are the thinnest parts of any diamond shape and the first place a knock does damage.
• On last after perfume, off before swimming.
• Store it flat so the cluster does not sit on top of other pieces.
