14k Gold Lab Grown Diamond Poire Drop

Two pointed stones stacked in one line, both tapering, so the eye travels from the top of the lobe straight down to the tip of the pear without a single interruption. This is the largest earring AVRA makes and it behaves like it. E colour, VS1 clarity, nothing inside either stone to distract from the outline. Put these on and everything else you are wearing can be very, very simple.

The higher clarity and colour grades are not a flourish. At four to five carats every stone is large enough that an inclusion or a trace of warmth would be visible from conversation distance. Small diamonds forgive. These do not, which is why we spec them tighter.

✦ Metal & Construction

• Solid 14k gold throughout, in yellow or white. Not plated, not filled, not vermeil.
• Four points across two stones, and each one is capped by its own prong. Points are where a diamond is most vulnerable and where cheap versions of this earring fail.
• The pear hangs on an independent link rather than sitting rigid, so the lower stone moves while the marquise stays fixed at the ear.
• The marquise is set flush and low against the lobe. At this weight, a high basket would let the whole earring pitch forward within an hour.
• Push backs on both posts. Press them fully home before you leave, because there is real weight hanging on them.

✦ How to Wear It

Hair fully up or slicked back. Half-up will not do it. Both stones are pointed and the earring is essentially a strong vertical line, so it needs a clear field to work in.

Nothing at the neck. No pendant, no collar, no layered chains. If you want something else on, make it horizontal and make it low: a single cuff or a tennis bracelet at the wrist. Keep the outfit to one colour and one shape. Poire is the piece that decides how the rest of the look behaves, and the women who wear it best treat it as the only decision they made that evening. Worth knowing how this differs from the Solène Drops, which pair a round with a pear: Solène is softer and more everyday, Poire is pointed at both ends and considerably larger.

✦ Care & Longevity

• Solid 14k gold will not tarnish or fade. It only needs cleaning.
• Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush. Pay attention to the link between the two stones and the underside of both settings, where residue collects fastest.
• Never sleep in these. At four to five carats the drop has genuine weight, and a night of tugging against a pillow is the fastest way to stretch a link or loosen a back.
• No showering, no swimming. Chlorine attacks the alloys in gold.
• On last, after perfume, hairspray and sunscreen. Off before anything else at the end of the night.
• Store each earring lying flat in your AVRA box so the pear is not pressed sideways against the marquise.
