Dual Cut Eternity Band

Most eternity bands give you one shape repeated to the point of wallpaper. This one has a rhythm to it, and the rhythm is what you notice before you notice the diamonds.

Mixing two cuts in one band is harder than it sounds. A step cut and a brilliant cut return light in completely different ways, so if the colour grades drift even slightly, the emeralds will read cooler than the ovals sitting beside them. Holding both to EF is the reason this band looks like one continuous line rather than two.

At 1 or 2ct this is a band you wear beside something else. It sits well against a plain gold ring, and it is the piece that gives a two-ring stack its structure. At 4 or 5ct it stops being a stacking band and starts being the ring.

Worn on the ring finger it functions as a wedding or anniversary band without ever announcing which. On the index finger it reads entirely differently, more like a statement than a promise. • Warm water, mild soap and a soft toothbrush, worked from the inside of the band outward. On a full eternity ring the stones on the palm side collect the most and get cleaned the least.
• Emerald cuts show a film faster than brilliant cuts do, because a flat table has nowhere for dirt to hide. If half your band looks duller than the other half, that is what it is.
• Take it off before the gym. A stone-set band under grip pressure is the fastest way to loosen a prong.
• Off before swimming. Chlorine attacks the alloys in gold over time.
